Vehicle Registration in the TRNC
All vehicles in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus must be registered with the TRNC authorities. The process differs depending on whether you are importing a vehicle or buying locally.
Importing a Vehicle
Step 1: Obtain Import Permission
Apply at the Ministry of Finance / Customs Office for import permission. You will need:
- •Residence permit
- •Passport
- •Vehicle documentation from country of origin
- •Purchase invoice
Step 2: Customs Clearance
Once the vehicle arrives, clear it through customs:
- •Pay import duty (varies by vehicle age and value)
- •Obtain customs clearance certificate
Step 3: Technical Inspection
Pass a technical inspection at an authorised inspection station:
- •Check brakes, lights, emissions, bodywork
- •Fee: ~500–800 TL
Step 4: Register at the Vehicle Registration Office
- •Submit all documents
- •Pay registration fee (~1,000–2,000 TL)
- •Receive TRNC number plates
Buying a Vehicle Locally
1. Find a vehicle — Through dealers or private sellers
2. Vehicle history check — Verify no outstanding fines or loans
3. Purchase contract — Notarised sale agreement
4. Transfer registration — At the Vehicle Registration Office
5. Insurance — Must be arranged before driving
Car Insurance
Third-party insurance is mandatory in the TRNC.
Types of Insurance
- •Third-party (Zorunlu): Minimum legal requirement, ~800–1,200 TL/year
- •Comprehensive (Kasko): Full coverage including theft, fire, damage, ~2,500–5,000 TL/year
MOT (Technical Inspection)
All vehicles must pass an annual MOT:
- •New cars: First MOT after 3 years, then annually
- •Older cars: Annual inspection
- •Where: Authorised inspection stations in Nicosia, Kyrenia, Famagusta
- •Cost: ~500–800 TL
- •Items checked: Brakes, tyres, lights, emissions, bodywork, seatbelts
TRNC Number Plates
TRNC plates have a distinctive format: AB 123 (2 letters, 3 digits) with the TRNC emblem. The colour indicates vehicle type:
- •Yellow plates: Commercial / taxi
- •White plates: Private vehicles
Driving Licence
You can drive in the TRNC with a valid foreign licence for up to 6 months. After that, you must either:
- •Convert your foreign licence to a TRNC licence, or
- •Take the TRNC driving test
