How to Get a Residence Permit in Northern Cyprus (TRNC)

Who Needs a Residence Permit?

Any foreign national who intends to stay in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) for more than 90 days must obtain a residence permit. This applies to retirees, employees, students, property owners, and family members of TRNC citizens.

Types of Residence Permits

1. Temporary Residence Permit (Mücahit İkamet İzni)

Valid for 1 year, renewable annually. The most common type for expats and property owners.

Requirements:

• •Health insurance valid in the TRNC

Sponsored by a TRNC employer. The employer must prove no local candidate could fill the position.

After 6 consecutive years of temporary residence, you may apply for permanent residence.

Step-by-Step Process

1. Gather all documents — Ensure your passport has at least 6 months validity and you have all required paperwork.

2. Get a medical certificate — Visit any TRNC-licensed doctor or hospital for a basic health check.

3. Open a TRNC bank account — You will need a local bank statement showing sufficient funds.

4. Obtain health insurance — Purchase a policy from any TRNC insurance company (costs approximately 1,500–2,500 TL per year).

5. Submit your application — Take all documents to your district Immigration Office. You will fill out an application form in Turkish.

6. Pay the fee — The annual fee is approximately 400–500 TL, payable at the Immigration Office.

7. Wait for processing — Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks. You will receive a receipt that allows you to stay legally while waiting.

8. Collect your permit — Return to the Immigration Office to collect your residence permit card.

Important Notes

• •Residence permits must be renewed before expiry. Do not let it lapse.
• •You must inform the Immigration Office if you change address.
• •A residence permit does not grant the right to work — you need a separate work permit.
