Digital Nomad's Guide to Northern Cyprus: Remote Work in the Sun

Internet speed, coworking spaces, best neighbourhoods for remote workers, and why Northern Cyprus is one of the Mediterranean's most affordable nomad destinations.

Why Northern Cyprus for Remote Work?

Northern Cyprus is emerging as one of the Mediterranean's most affordable digital nomad destinations. Warm weather 320+ days a year, a growing expat community, reliable internet, and living costs 40-50% below southern Cyprus or Western Europe.

The main draws:

Internet & Connectivity

Home Internet

Fibre is available in central Kyrenia, Nicosia, and Famagusta. In outlying areas, ADSL or fixed wireless may be the only option. Check availability before signing a rental contract.

Mobile Data

4.5G is available across most of the TRNC. Türk Telekom and Turkcell both offer unlimited plans for €15–25/month. Coverage is good in towns but can be spotty in the Karpaz and mountains.

Best Internet Cafés & Coworking

Kyrenia has the most options for remote workers:

Best Areas to Live as a Nomad

Kyrenia (Girne) — The Top Choice

The tourism capital and most nomad-friendly city. Walkable harbour area, restaurants, bars, and beaches within minutes. The expat community is largest here.

Best neighbourhoods:

Rent: €300–450 for a 1-bedroom apartment

Nicosia (Lefkoşa) — The Capital

The commercial and administrative centre. More business-oriented than Kyrenia. Universities mean a younger crowd. Cheaper than Kyrenia.

Rent: €220–380 for a 1-bedroom

Famagusta (Gazimağusa) — History & Beaches

A university city with a historic walled old town. Smaller expat community but affordable and charming.

Rent: €250–400 for a 1-bedroom

Taxes and Legal

Tourist Stay

As a digital nomad, you can stay up to 90 days on a tourist visa. For longer stays, you need a residence permit (see our guide). Most nomads do 90-day visa runs or apply for a temporary residence permit.

Tax Residency

If you stay more than 183 days in a calendar year, you may become tax-resident in the TRNC. Foreign income (salary from abroad, freelance income from non-TRNC clients) is generally not taxed locally, but you should consult a tax advisor for your specific situation.

Banking

Open a local bank account for paying rent and utilities. Credit West Bank and HSBC are popular with expats. See our guide: Opening a Bank Account in Northern Cyprus.
